About

The NECTISE programme was developed from the question ‘are you ready for NEC?’, which considered both the military (operational) perspective and the NEC development community (or defence supply chain) perspective.  The realisation of NEC is fundamentally linked to the developing concept of Through Life Capability Management and the range of topics addressed by NECTISE reflects this broad coverage.

The research aims
The articulation, and detailed understanding, of what through-life systems management means for defence capability
Systems engineering tools and processes to support through-life management of defence  capability, effectively transferred into BAE Systems and the defence supply chain NEC-applicable architectures and supply chain structures to support cost-effective incremental acquisition/delivery of defence capability

Clear elucidation of the metrics appropriate to  through-life management of defence capability and  the means through which they could be measured. An understanding of how to deliver NEC-readiness of products and services
Convincing demonstrations of the advances in applied Systems Engineering achieved by the programme
Dissemination of knowledge in Systems Engineering for through-life management of  NEC, particularly through the development of  training suitable for both supplier and customer organisations. Knowledge of the implications of interoperability for standards and guidelines to address the integration challenges associated with NEC

These aims were addressed through four topic groups.  There were also many relevant cross-cutting themes and the most important of these were included within the project.  The principles of network enablement were considered within the military and development and support communities. The figure below shows the topic areas and the work packages they contained, together with the cross-cutting themes surrounding them.

Demonstrations

Lead partner: Loughborough University (Michael Henshaw)
Contributing partners: all other partners contribute.

NECTISE research addressed the system of systems challenges associated with the realisation of NEC benefits, with a particular focus on the contribution of industry to the overall defence enterprise that supports capability enabled by networks.  The relationships between the various research strands and, hence, the various systems involved in the realisation of NEC were revealed through integrated demonstration of the research outputs.  There were major demonstration phases during the course of the programme.

Demonstrations were scenario based and consider the major decision making activities associated with managing capability over time, including periods of military operation.
