Through Life System Management Topic (TLSM) Overview

Through Life Systems Management (TLSM) for Network Enabled Capability (NEC) must deal with very different challenges from those tackled in lifecycle management for conventional systems.  Our research investigates both the challenges that must be addressed in order to achieve successful NEC, through life, and also the enterprise lifecycle practices and system characteristics that are needed to deliver and sustain Through Life Capability Management for NEC.  The success of NEC is ultimately determined in the Operational Domain, and the effectiveness achieved in this User environment must be a central driver for the TLSM of the capability and the systems that, together, help achieve it.  TLSM also focuses on other practical enterprise aspects, such as the affordability, safety, certification and achievability of proposed system solution elements and the contractual and resource management decisions required to develop and manage them throughout their lifecycles. This is challenging even for complex conventional systems, but for NEC Systems of Systems this demands a TLSM approach that can deal with the inherent dynamic changes, multiple configurations and uncertainties and that can do so across multiple enterprises and asynchronous lifecycles of individual systems.

The Through Life Systems Management research addresses these complex NEC Operational and Organisational lifecycle issues and their implications on lifecycle management through four research streams:

  • Understanding and Responding to NEC Environments, which establishes the dynamic, uncertain nature of NECs and develops risk-focused methodologies and clarifies stakeholder responsibilities to deal with these challenges within and between enterprises

  • Lifecycle Models for Evolutionary NEC, which applies a service-oriented paradigm to establish the lifecycle dynamics of NEC and the systems that contribute to it, including issues of maturity, cost and the management of complexity

  • Decision management for NEC, which investigates the practical implementation of NEC-enabling systems projects within NEC lifecycles, such as Systems Engineering practices, Certification and Acceptance.

  • Critical System Features for NEC lifecycle management, which investigates the characterisation of the complex system and system-of-systems features that drive the NEC challenge and includes research into System Dependability aspects such as safety, availability and security in NEC Environments.

The TLSM research team comprises researchers from five Universities:  Cranfield, Leeds, Manchester, York and Queens University Belfast, each bring expertise in key aspects relating to TLSM for NEC, such as Lifecycle Management, Safety Assessment and Certification, Stakeholder requirements and perceptions, Through life cost modelling.
