Through Life System Management Topic (TLSM) Overview
Through Life Systems Management (TLSM) for Network Enabled Capability (NEC) must deal with very different challenges from those tackled in lifecycle management for conventional systems. Our research investigates both the challenges that must be addressed in order to achieve successful NEC, through life, and also the enterprise lifecycle practices and system characteristics that are needed to deliver and sustain Through Life Capability Management for NEC. The success of NEC is ultimately determined in the Operational Domain, and the effectiveness achieved in this User environment must be a central driver for the TLSM of the capability and the systems that, together, help achieve it. TLSM also focuses on other practical enterprise aspects, such as the affordability, safety, certification and achievability of proposed system solution elements and the contractual and resource management decisions required to develop and manage them throughout their lifecycles. This is challenging even for complex conventional systems, but for NEC Systems of Systems this demands a TLSM approach that can deal with the inherent dynamic changes, multiple configurations and uncertainties and that can do so across multiple enterprises and asynchronous lifecycles of individual systems.
The Through Life Systems Management research addresses these complex NEC Operational and Organisational lifecycle issues and their implications on lifecycle management through four research streams:
